Using Edge Browser

Microsoft Edge is the browser installed on Council computers. It is what you will use for the Help Hub, the intranet, and most Council web systems.

Open it from the taskbar, or press the Start button and type Edge.

Sign in with your Council account

Worth doing once, on your first day.

Select your profile icon at the top right and sign in with your Council email address. Your favourites and settings then follow to any Council computer you sign into. This is especially useful if you hot-desk or move between sites with different devices regularly.

Do not save Council passwords in Edge

Edge will offer to remember passwords. Decline for anything work-related.

Council passwords belong in 1Password, which is the only approved place for them — it can be shared with your team, recovered when someone leaves, and managed properly. See Approved password managers.

If you already have Council passwords saved in Edge, 1Password can import them. Delete them from Edge afterwards.

Browser extensions

Extensions are software, and they can read everything on every page you visit, including Pathway, ECM and your webmail. A well-reviewed extension can be sold to a new owner and turn malicious in a single update.

Please message us before installing one rather than treating it as a browser setting.

The basics

If you are new to browsers:

  • The address bar at the top is both the address bar and the search box. Type a web address, or type what you are looking for and press Enter.
  • Tabs let you keep several pages open at once. Select a tab to switch, or the X to close it.
  • Favourites save a page for later/ Select the star in the address bar, name it, and select Done. Find them again with Ctrl + Shift + O.
  • Ctrl + F searches the page you are on. This is must faster than scrolling a long document.
