Setup 1Password

1Password is Kingborough Council's password manager. It stores your passwords in an encrypted vault, generates strong ones for you, and lets teams share credentials safely instead of emailing them around.

It is the only approved place to keep Council passwords — see Approved password managers.

Getting access

  1. Send us a message to request access, with a short reason for your request
  2. We will send you an invitation and a quick start guide

Step 1: Activate your account

  1. Find the invitation email from 1Password.
  2. Select Activate your account.
  3. Sign in with your Council email address and passphrase. This uses single sign-on, so there is no separate password to remember.

Step 2: Install the app and browser extension

  1. Open Company Portal on your work computer.
  2. Install the 1Password app.
  3. The 1Password browser extension installs automatically.

You can also install 1Password on your phone from the App Store or Google Play, and sign in the same way.

Step 3: Start using it

Bookmark kingboroughcouncil.1password.com

From here you can:

  • Save your passwords when logging into websites
  • Generate strong passwords
  • Store secure notes (PINs, keys, etc.)
  • Access shared vaults if assigned

Moving passwords you already have

If your passwords are currently saved in Chrome, Edge or Safari, 1Password can import them. The app walks you through exporting from your browser and bringing them in.

Once they are imported, delete them from the browser and turn the browser's password saving off. Leaving both running means you end up with two sets of passwords drifting out of sync, and you will not know which is current.

If you have a lot of passwords, or a shared team set, message us and we will help you plan the move.

Good habits

  • Let 1Password generate passwords rather than inventing your own
  • Never reuse a password across systems
  • Never share credentials by email or Teams — use a shared vault
  • Lock your vault when you step away from a shared machine

Your family membership

Your Council account includes a free 1Password Families membership. You can use it for your own logins at home at no cost. Keep personal items in your personal vault, not in a Council one.

If you get stuck

Send us a message and we will step you through it. 1Password's own support site also has detailed guides.
