Approved Software Register
Council devices run software that has been assessed and licensed. This page explains how to get what you need, and what to do if it is not already available.
Software you can install yourself
Anything in Company Portal is already approved and licensed — install it yourself, no request needed.
See Install software with Company Portal.
The approved list
| Software | What it is for | How to get it |
| Microsoft 365 | Email, documents, Teams, OneDrive | Pre-installed |
| 1Password | Password management | Company Portal — see Set up 1Password |
| Nitro PDF Pro | PDF editing | See Install Nitro PDF Pro |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot | AI assistance | See Approved AI tools |
Requesting something new
See Request new software or an AI tool.
Please do not install software yourself
Council devices block most unapproved installations. Where something does get through, it creates problems that are not obvious at the time:
- Licensing. Unlicensed software on a Council device is the Council's liability, not yours, and free for personal use rarely means free for a council.
- Security. Unassessed software may send data somewhere we cannot see.
- Support. We cannot help with something we do not know is there.
- Continuity. When you leave, nobody knows what the work depended on.
None of this is a reason not to ask. If you need a tool, ask — the answer is often yes, and where it is no there is usually an approved alternative.
Browser extensions count
Extensions are software. They can read everything on every page you visit, including Pathway, ECM and your mailbox. A well-reviewed extension can be sold to a new owner and turn malicious in a single update.
Please treat an extension as a software request rather than a browser setting.
Software already installed that is not on the list
If you are using something that was installed before this register existed, or that you are not sure about, message us. We would rather know about it than not, and nobody is in trouble for asking.
