Connecting to Systems from Home (VPN)

This guide explains how to connect securely to Council systems from home using Cisco AnyConnect VPN. This is a secure connection that lets you safely access Council systes when you are not in the office.

When you work from home or another location, your computer is outside the Council network. The VPN creates a protected link back to Council, making it behave as if your device is physically in the office.

VPN is required for the following services:

  • Info Council
  • Network drives (G: drive, H: drive, P: drive, S: drive)
  • Pathway

What you need before you start

Before connecting, make sure you have your Council-issed laptop and an active internet connection at home. Cisco AnyConnect is installed on all Council-issued laptops by default.

Step 1: Connect to your Home Wi-Fi

Before using VPN, you must be connected to the internet.

  1. Click the Wi-Fi icon in the bottom right of your screen
  2. Select your home Wi-Fi network
  3. Enter your Wi-Fi password if prompted
  4. Confirm you are connected before continuing

If you are not connected to Wi-Fi, VPN will not work.

Step 2: Open Cisco AnyConnect

  1. Sign into your laptop using your password or pin.
  2. Open the Cisco AnyConnect icon within the taskbar (lower right of the screen near the date/time)
  3. In the VPN field, ensure it has portal.kingborough.tas.gov.au and click Connect

Once connected, you will be able to access Kingborough Council systems and resources (e.g. network drives, Pathway, Finance).
